Martial and mystical training under waterfalls is an ancient ancestral tradition which occurs in many cultures.
In the Yamabushi, Shinto, and Shamanic traditions of Japan it is known as Takigyo “asceticism under the waterfall”. The practice involves standing/meditating under the force of a waterfall for a few minutes.
This requires certain preparations before entering :
1/ Light fasting or at least no meat as this produces psychic heat which reduces sensitivity.
2/ Breathing exercises to strengthen the lungs.
3/ Warm up exercises to get the blood flowing.
4/ Misogi a purifying ritual such as sprinkling yourself with cold water from the waterfall pool or scrubbing yourself with aromatic leaves whilst chanting.
5/ Give a greeting and present an offering asking for safe passage, express thanks to nature and the waterfall. Water spirits are historically renowned for being bloodthirsty and will happily take a sacrifice if one isn’t offered.
6/ A walking staff is a handy balance aid when wading out to the plunge pool (or getting pulled out). They can also double as a bokken if you choose to assume the ‘Torii-gamae’, a traditional meditation posture used by Samurai akin to ‘standing like a tree’ in the Internal Arts.
7/ As all cold-water immersion carries a degree of danger it’s only common sense to take along towels, (survival) blankets and a flask of hot, sweet tea.
Universally people who are sick, mourning or inebriated are barred from entering due to miasma or spiritual pollution.
The immersion itself fosters mental fortitude by challenging the practitioner to endure the physical discomfort of the cold water and the impact of the waterfall. It is a purifying act of bravery which overcomes fear, builds mental resilience and physical strength. Focus is increased, stress is reduced and a sense of accomplishment is achieved.
As a rigorous cleansing ritual for mind, body and spirit it will purify the heart, wash away negative feelings or a bad destiny and invokes blessings and healing. With all this, one is essentially reborn, returned to innocence, and ready to start life anew.
